Places to visit

The earliest traces of settlements on the Lofoten Islands stem from the Stone Age and it was an important chiefdom during the Viking era around 1000 years ago. Throughout history fishing has been the main reason why people settled here, and cod is still the main export item. For centuries, people in search of work travelled here for the winter fishing season.

Charming villages have developed out of the fishing industry. Clusters of small, colourful houses nestle between the steep mountains and the raging ocean. Visit authentic fishing villages like Henningsvær and Reine to catch a glimpse of local life. You can stay in renovated fishing cabins by the shore, known as rorbu in Norwegian.
