The Ofoten Line

The Ofoten Line was built to ensure access to an ice-free port in order to export the rich iron ore deposits from Northern Sweden. Construction took place from the late 19^th century and into the early 20^th century and faced extreme challenges in terms of climate and logistics. A total of more than 5,000 people were involved in the construction of the railway line. Iitinerant workers, so-called navvies, sought the happiness of what appeared to be a European “Klondike”. The myths and legends about the navvy culture are colourful and exciting.

Dramatic history

On the train journey you will get close encounters with the railway’s interesting history. In addition to the challenging construction, events from the battle of Narvik in Spring 1940 form a dramatic backdrop to the railway line.

In a time of war, access to iron ore is crucial and in the winter of 1940 all eyes were set on Narvik and Ofot Line in order to secure the iron ore coming from Northern Sweden. The battle of Narvik between the Nazis and the Allied forces lasted for 62 days and a large part of it was fought in the vicinity of the railway line.
