Get on an adventure to discover the most astonishing views of the famous Nærøyfjord, listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage spots. The bus will take you straight from Aurland or Flåm to Bakka, where you can start walking up to Rimstigen. The afternoon bus back to Flåm or Aurland will make it easy to return to your hotel after the activity.
Timetable: Bus Rimstigen & Breiskrednosi 2021
Get up early, so that you have time to enjoy a fantastic breakfast, which will give you energy for the hike. Jump on the morning bus to Bakka, walk a little in the direction of Tufte and start your ascent at around 9:00 in the morning. The record for going up to Rimstigen is 28 minutes, but you do not need to rush that much. However, do keep in mind that the bus back to Flåm or Aurland is in the early afternoon.
The steep path to Rimstigen, that takes you up to 725 metres above sea level, is considered demanding, so it is recommended for those who have good level of fitness. The length of the hike is nearly 3 kilometres. Be prepared for some exposed parts with rapid drops, but also with fantastic views almost from the very beginning. Despite being quite hard, it is a very rewarding climb, with the most stunning panorama of the Nærøyfjord from the top! Allow for around 3 hours of hike for the roundtrip.
Even though the season for Rimstigen hikes starts in June, there may be some mud from the melting snow. Since this area is very prone to avalanches during winter time, you might see some fallen rocks around. The season usually ends in October. No matter when you decide to walk up to Rimstigen, always dress for the weather and be prepared that the conditions in the mountains might change instantly.
Instead of walking back down the steep trail from Rimstigen to Bakka, after reaching the top you can decide to continue your hike along the Rimstigfjellet to Breiskrednosi, reaching 1.189 metres above sea level. This mountain top is considered a hidden gem, that offers the most iconic view of the Nærøyfjord.
From here, continue down to Dyrdal, where you can catch the fully electric boat Legacy of The Fjords, that will take you back to Aurland or Flåm. If you decide to go for this option, be time-aware, as the boat leaves Dyrdal at 18:15* and there are no other transport options. Once you are on board of the ferry, you can relax, while enjoying the landscape of the amazing fjord around you.
*This has to be pre-booked at least 15 minutes before departure.
Another option is to get off the bus already at Langhuso between Flåm and Gudvangen, where you can walk the old road down the picturesque valley to Undredal. This is an approx. 7 km long easy trail, perfect for a family adventure. It is marked with red T’s and starts on the left-hand side of the road. By the end of the walk, you are rewarded by a great view of the charming town and the stunning Aurlandsfjord.
Along the way you will likely meet some of the four-legged residents of Undredal: goats. Undredal is famous for its goat cheese, and you will pass mountain farms where they produce cheese in the summer. Make sure to treat yourself to a taste when you reach the village.
From Undredal you can take the Fjord Cruise Nærøyfjord back to either Aurland or Flåm. Make sure to book your ticket at least 15 minutes before departure.
