Turbulent history

The history of Quality Hotel Grand Royal dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, with the first part being designed by architect Harald Sund and built in 1938. At that time, Hotell Royal was Northern Norway’s most modern hotel with 90 beds and place for 260 guests in the restaurants. Soon, as the war unfolded, it was taken over by Wehrmacht, which led to extensive damages caused by bombing the building and the area by The Allies.

After the war

Renovation and development of the hotel started immediately after the war. A neighbouring plot of land with the remains of a Grand Hotell Fønix, which was established in 1900 and burnt down in 1940, was bought and the works started. The new hotel, named Grand Royal Hotell, was ready in 1951 and for a short while bore the title of Norway’s largest, offering 220 beds in 114 rooms.

Sweet dreams stay

The Sweet Dreams project is a collaboration between Nordic Choice Hotels and UNICEF that helps children at risk of human trafficking get a safe night's sleep. You can support the project by choosing not to have your room cleaned when you stay with us for more than one consecutive night. All you need to do is hang the Sweet Dreams sign on your door before 11pm. For each room we do not clean, we will donate 10 SEK to UNICEF. This also helps us to minimise the use of chemicals, electricity, and water at our hotels. Together we can make a difference!
