The history of Norway’s best Group

Norway’s Best Group AS, formerly Aurland Ressursutvikling AS, and its wholly owned subsidiary Norway’s best AS, formerly Flåm AS, together with alliance partners in partly owned companies and other local tourism operators, have contributed to the development of Flåm as a world-class destination.

When the company was established in 1997, both the Flåm Railway and the tourism industry in the Sognefjord region had been in long-term decline. Local ownership of the tourism initiative was therefore established. Through strong customer orientation, a clear understanding of the region’s potential and significant investments, the Flåm Railway has since been positioned as a world-renowned tourist railway, and Flåm as a flagship destination in the international tourism market. The development of Flåm has become a source of inspiration for the wider Norwegian tourism industry.

Approximately 1.5 million guests from more than 150 different countries visit Flåm each year. In 2019, Flåm was ranked as the world’s seventh most popular cruise port, and number one in Scandinavia. Thanks to the Flåm model, cruise guests generate substantial local value creation.

Tourism turnover in Aurland municipality has grown from NOK 80 million in 1998 to more than NOK 1.6 billion in 2024. Tourism now accounts for 70 per cent of the municipality’s total turnover. The strategic focus on tourism development in Flåm has contributed to extensive business spin-offs, several hundred year-round jobs and population growth.

Schage Eiendom was one of the initiators behind the establishment of Myrkdalen Fjellandsby AS in the late 1990s. Since then, more than 600 holiday homes have been built, along with hotels, shops, restaurants, two chairlifts and several other ski lifts. This represents substantial total investments.

In April 2020, Norway’s best Group AS and Myrkdalen Fjellandsby AS merged. The merged company is one of Norway’s largest tourism operators, with annual revenues of up to NOK 1 billion across all affiliated companies.

The merger represents a perfect combination of fjord and mountain, mountain and fjord. Flåm is one of the world’s most popular destinations, with peak visitor numbers during the summer season. Myrkdalen is a popular winter destination, with a clear development strategy focused on active, year-round tourism.

In 2024, we increased our ownership in The Fjords to 100 per cent, having previously owned 50 per cent together with Fjord1. This positions us strongly to further invest in the development of innovative, zero-emission travel experiences in selected Norwegian fjords.

In December 2025, we acquired ownership of Narvikfjellet AS in Narvik and Polar Park in Bardu, the world’s northernmost wildlife park. This forms part of our strategy to strengthen our overall product portfolio by engaging in other attractive destinations across Norway.

Tourism remains a sector with considerable growth potential, a need for further professionalisation and a more sustainable approach to management and development. A national strategy that includes engagement in high-quality destinations and products across Norway is therefore a natural next step for us.

Stronger international distribution capacity and a clearer national position will generate increased traffic to all our selected destinations. Norway’s Best aims to become a strong and leading Norwegian brand in the international tourism market, recognised for its outstanding portfolio of spectacular nature- and culture-based experiences.

Sustainability

Norway’s best Group AS aims to lead the way towards more sustainable tourism. We take a holistic approach to sustainability and strive to be a relevant and responsible tourism operator. We adapt to future needs and challenges while taking into account the environment, local culture and the people affected by tourism. For us, sustainability is about balancing sound economic growth and attractive year-round jobs with respect for nature and close interaction with the local communities in which we operate.

Sustainable investments form the foundation of our relevance as a tourism operator, and year-round employment is essential to securing expertise, long-term development capacity and vibrant local communities.

We value diversity and actively work to promote inclusion. Caring for nature is at the heart of everything we do.
