A quick look at the history of the Flåm Railway

20 is an important number for the Flåm Railway. Construction of the 20-kilometre-long railway began in 1923, and to climb from the fjord up to 867 metres above sea level, no fewer than 20 tunnels had to be blasted through, 18 of them by hand. Nearly 20 years later, in 1940, the railway was finally ready for operation.

Here you can read more about the history of the Flåm Railway.

Authentic exhibition

In addition to information about the impressive engineering, the museum also includes stories about the hardworking people, the technical challenges, as well as a glimpse into village culture in Flåm and the surrounding areas. Through an extensive collection of photographs, videos, and cultural artefacts, you can vividly imagine the history. Among the items on display are an authentic El 9 locomotive, an older electric shunting engine, and draisines.
