The Magic of the Polar Night at Polar Park

Reading progress

The Polar Night is not simply a time without sunshine. It's a season when the changing light transforms the landscape and creates unforgettable experiences. At Polar Park, you'll discover the true atmosphere of a Northern Norwegian winter, where silence, wildlife and nature come together to create lasting memories.

From late November until mid-January, the sun remains below the horizon, and the landscape settles into a calm and beautiful rhythm. Shades of blue, moonlight and, on clear nights, the Northern Lights create a magical atmosphere found only in the Arctic.

A Magical Atmosphere

During the Polar Night, Polar Park becomes a truly enchanting place to visit. Animals such as moose, wolves, lynx and Arctic foxes adapt naturally to the changing light, and many are more active during this time of year.

During twilight and the famous Arctic blue hour, you can observe the animals in their natural surroundings while the sky shifts through soft pastel colours, deep blue tones and, if you're lucky, the dancing green Northern Lights.

Northern Lights and Star-Filled Skies

The Polar Night also offers excellent conditions for seeing the Northern Lights. The cold, dry inland climate around Bardu often provides clear skies, while the park's remote location away from light pollution creates ideal viewing conditions.

Watching the Northern Lights above the mountains while wildlife roams through the snowy landscape is an unforgettable experience and a highlight for many international visitors.

Practical Tips for Your Winter Visit

  • Make the most of the daylight: During the Polar Night, daylight is brightest between around 10:00 and 14:00. This is usually the best time to spot the animals.
  • Dress for the weather: Winter temperatures can fall well below freezing. We recommend dressing in warm layers and wearing insulated footwear.
  • Join a guided tour: Every Saturday and Sunday, you can join one of our experienced animal keepers for a guided predator tour and learn more about the animals that live in Polar Park.
  • Discover more of Northern Norway: Make the most of your stay by combining your visit with dog sledding, ice fishing or a Northern Lights excursion. Bardu, Narvik and Tromsø offer a wide range of authentic Arctic experiences.
