Experience the Flåm Railway
The Flåm Railway is a spectacular train journey running from Myrdal on the Bergen Line down to Flåm station, at the innermost end of the Aurlandsfjord.
Every year, this remarkable stretch of railway attracts visitors from all corners of the world, making the Flåm Railway one of Norway’s largest and most impressive tourist attractions.
Flåm–Myrdal–Flåm
In the space of an hour, the train takes you from sea level by the Aurlandsfjord in Flåm up to Myrdal, a mountain station situated 867 metres above sea level. Myrdal is also a stop on the Bergen Line, which makes it easy to combine the Flåm Railway with trains to and from Bergen or Oslo.
From the comfortable classic carriages, you can watch the shifting landscapes of the Flåm Valley glide past your window. Before the train climbs into the more rugged parts of the valley, it passes farmland, the old centre of Flåm, and the church from 1670. The shimmering blue river follows the railway for much of the journey, and you’ll spot small farms perched in places where you’d hardly believe anyone could live.
The train makes a five-minute photo stop at Kjosfossen, where you can step out onto the platform.

An incredible feat of engineering
Construction of the railway began in 1923 and was completed in 1940, and it’s often described as one of Norway’s greatest engineering achievements. The 20-kilometre line is among the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world, with 80% of the journey running on a gradient of 5.5%.
It includes no fewer than 20 tunnels, 18 of which were carved out by hand. One of them even makes a full 180-degree turn inside the mountain.
The railway runs beside an old construction road that was originally built to transport materials from the fjord up into the mountains during the building of the Bergen Line around 1900. This road is known as the Rallar Road, or Navvies’ Road, and today it’s a popular cycling route from Finse to Flåm.

The world’s most beautiful train journey?
National Geographic Traveler Magazine has named the Flåm Railway one of Europe’s top ten train journeys, while Lonely Planet went even further in 2014, calling it one of the best train rides in the world.
The journey through the Flåm Valley is truly an experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime, and people travel here from all over the world to see it for themselves.
