Join a snowshoe hike from Flåm

Winter casts a quiet blanket over the fjord landscape, and on a snowshoe hike from Flåm you’ll experience it up close. The trip begins with a minibus ride along the Aurlandsfjord to the spectacular Stegastein viewpoint, 650 metres above sea level. Here you’ll get a short introduction to snowshoes and their history before your guide leads you into the winter terrain, sharing stories about mountain farms, fjord life and the surrounding nature.

During the 1.5-hour hike, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Aurland, Flåm and snow-clad peaks, with a stop along the way for hot drinks and a moment of silence. In the darkest winter months, the experience becomes even more atmospheric with headlamps and, if you’re lucky, a starry sky over the fjord. The hike requires some physical effort but no prior experience – just a sense of adventure.

Meeting point

Meet at the FjordSafari reception at the pier in Flåm 15 minutes before departure.

The art of snowshoeing

With the snowy winters we get in Norway, getting around isn’t always the easiest. But with snowshoes on your feet, you stay on top of the snow rather than wading through it. In the past, they were essential for simply getting from place to place, whereas today they’re a great way to head into the mountains without needing skis.

You don’t need any experience to go snowshoeing. Once the snowshoes are strapped onto your boots, all you need to do is walk forward with a slightly wider stance. Even so, the guide starts the trip with a quick introduction to make sure no one falls behind.

Along the way, your guide will tell you all about the dramatic landscape you’re walking through, the winter by the fjord, and the unique local culture of the area. And, in true Norwegian style, you’ll also be treated to a hot drink and a bar of Kvikk Lunsj.

Dress warmly and join us for a memorable hike in the forest above the fjord!

Is this trip suitable for me?

This tour is perfect for beginners. You’ll need to be in reasonably good shape, but you don’t need any experience with snowshoes. Just remember to dress warmly, as it can get very cold in winter.
