Fishing in Lofoten

All year
Easy

Lofoten is one of the world’s top destinations for fishing trips, where you can experience the thrill of fishing across diverse seasons. From the historic Lofoten cod fishery in winter to a wide variety of fish species in spring and summer, Lofoten offers a unique fishing experience all year round.

Join us on a traditional fishing trip aboard MS Symra

On a fishing trip with XXLofoten, you will enjoy an authentic fishing experience aboard MS Symra, a traditional fishing vessel that has been in operation since 1917. The vessel is perfectly adapted to the conditions in Lofoten and is protected by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage.

Our tours depart from Svolvær, sailing past well-known landmarks such as Fiskerkona. Our experienced crew takes you to the best fishing grounds based on the season and time of year. You will not only learn how to fish, but also how to gut the catch on board. And of course, you can take your catch home with you.

The boat trip itself is an experience, especially for those interested in nature, photography, and history.

Practical information

Fishing Trips Throughout the Year: From Cod to Saithe

There are 10 fishing stations with powered handlines on board, so guests should expect to share fishing space with other participants on this tour. The vessel is certified for 38 passengers, but we take a maximum of 20 guests per trip. We promise you will be fully satisfied before we set course back to the harbor.

Spring, summer, and autumn offer milder weather and excellent conditions for bringing the whole family on a fishing trip. MS Symra has a large deck with plenty of space, and young children are also welcome on board. Children under the age of 12 fish together with an adult. We offer family pricing, and families are given their own designated fishing station on board.

Winter Fishing (12 February – 30 April)

Experience the traditional and historic cod fishery in Lofoten—an adventure deeply rooted in history. The migratory Arctic cod (skrei), which travels from the Barents Sea to Lofoten to spawn, has been the lifeblood of the region since the Viking Age.

Weather conditions can be challenging, so we recommend allowing an extra fishing day in case of changes. Remember to dress warmly.

Packing List

All guests are provided with flotation suits year-round. We also offer boots for rent if needed.

Please dress according to the weather and feel free to bring a backpack with extra warm clothing.

It is essential to dress warmly in layers, preferably wool. The sea can be cold in Lofoten both in winter and summer.
