Materials: Waste, Reuse and the Circular Economy

We are working towards a more circular approach to our resources, treating waste as a resource wherever possible.

This includes food, packaging, textiles, furniture and equipment used in our daily operations. Through better waste sorting, reuse, recycling and more considered purchasing, we aim to reduce resource use and extend the lifespan of the materials we use.

We ensure that waste is sorted correctly at our sites while looking for ways to reduce waste and make better use of resources. This can include extending the life of furniture and equipment through reuse, putting surplus materials to use elsewhere or finding new uses for resources that would otherwise be discarded.

Resource Use

As part of the hospitality and tourism industry, we use substantial resources every day, from food and packaging to textiles, furniture and equipment.

We continually work to use these resources more efficiently, reduce material consumption and limit waste without compromising on quality.

We try to make it easy for guests to make thoughtful choices. When they are eating in the restaurant, we ask them to consider whether they need packaging. This helps us avoid using takeaway boxes when they are unnecessary.

Better Waste Sorting and Data

Improving waste sorting and the quality of our waste data is an ongoing priority. Understanding what types of waste we generate and where they occur gives us an important foundation for reducing waste and making better use of resources.

Our destinations have different waste management needs and solutions, adapted to local conditions. At the same time, we aim to develop more systematic working methods and better data across our business. This allows us to track progress, identify opportunities for improvement and take more targeted action to reduce waste and use resources efficiently.

Extending the Life of Oil in Our Ski Lifts

In Myrkdalen, we use a smart filtration system that allows us to extend the life of the oil in our ski lifts.

Rather than changing the oil at fixed intervals, we regularly filter and test it in collaboration with Norsk Oljelaboratorium. We only replace the oil when the analysis shows it is necessary.

For some gearboxes, this can postpone oil changes by several years. This reduces both resource use and waste while maintaining safe and reliable operations.
