With Myrkdalen as your base, you are just a short distance from incredible hikes in magnificent nature. Whether you're seeking a challenging mountain trek with fjord views or a more family-friendly excursion, you'll find something perfect for your adventure.
Directly north of Myrkdalen lies the Sognefjord, while to the east, you’ll find the Nærøyfjord. Between these stunning fjords, countless mountain peaks rise majestically, offering breathtaking views of the fjords.
Here are three of our favourite hikes with fjord views:
Breiskrednosi – spectacular views over Nærøyfjord
No matter which route you choose to reach this mountain peak, it’s a challenging hike, but the reward at the top is truly worth the effort! The view of the Nærøyfjord and the surrounding landscape is one of the most spectacular experiences you can have on your Western Norway adventure.
Why not combine the mountain hike with a fjord cruise on the Nærøyfjord? You can get off at the roadless village Dyrdal, or start at Bakka and ascend Rimstigen. If you begin from Dyrdal, start by walking a 5 km long gravel road to the summer pastures at Hjølmo, continue to Vassete and then up to Breiskrednosi. From Bakka, you follow the path up Rimstigen to Skarsvotni, behind Rimstigfjellet and over to the summit.
Prest – mountain hike with fjord views all the way
The peak Prest near Aurlandsfjorden is a gem of a hike. The hike starts from the National Scenic Route over Aurlandsfjellet, about an hour´s drive from Myrkdalen. At the designated parking area, a clear and well-maintained path leads up to the viewpoint at 1363 meters above sea level.
Here, you can bring children of all ages and walk as far as their motivation allows, as the view over the Aurlandsfjord is phenomenal after just a few hundred meters.
After about 2.5 km and 500 meters of elevation, you will reach the viewpoint with a panoramic view of the Aurlandsfjord stretching south towards Flåm. To the north, you can see the sharp Kamben marking the spot where the Aurlandsfjord meets the Nærøyfjord. The actual summit is about 100 meters further up, and those who would like a longer hike can continue to Blåskavelen (1,809 meters above sea level), the highest mountain in Aurland municipality.
Family-friendly Ovriseggi at Vikafjellet
Vikafjellet is a short drive from Myrkdalen Mountain Resort. On this mountain plateau, there is an extensive network of trails of varying difficulty and length. Ovriseggi is a family-friendly hike with fantastic views of the Sognefjord and Vik.
When driving over Vikafjellet towards Vik, park on a small gravel road on the right side just after the tunnel. Along the ridge is a clear and marked trail in gently rolling terrain. If you prefer not to continue all the way to Vik, the usual turnaround point is at Daurmålshaugen. This hike is a 2-3 hours round trip.
