Travel tip: El-biking in Myrkdalen and Vikafjellet
More and more people are discovering the joy of electric bikes – especially when going uphill! What used to be a struggle up the hills has become effortlessly fun.
Mountain hiking is a perfect family activity, and the area around Myrkdalen offers a variety of mountain and summit hikes suitable for all ages.
During the summer, the chairlift operates from early July to the end of August, making it quick and easy to reach the mountains.
Myrkdalen Hotel is an excellent base for various day trips. For kids, we recommend the trail from Helgatun to Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge — a fun summer nature trail with interesting questions for the whole family to solve together. The new mountain lodge has facilities for play and outdoor activities. From Wednesday to Sunday in July and August, you can enjoy ice cream, pastries, and traditional dinner dishes available for purchase.
Another great mountain hike for children is to Mørkvestølen, beautifully located by a small river with a stunning view of Myrkdalsvatnet. From Mørkvestølen, continue up to the idyllic Svortetjødn, perfect for a refreshing dip on warm summer days.
For summit hikes, Svolefjell, Bjørndalskamben, and Finnbunuten are the nearest options in the area, and all can depart from Myrkdalen Hotel. Finnbunuten is the mountain above the ski resort, with the most popular route following the Kari Traa chairlift and continuing along the ridge to the top. On clear days, you'll have a great view of famous glaciers such as Hardangerjøkulen, Jostedalsbreen, and Folgefonna.
Jump on the chairlift right outside Myrkdalen Hotel in July and August! The summer chairlift transports you 400 vertical meters – quickly and easily to the mountains.
By taking the chairlift, you have an excellent opportunity to reach several hiking destinations in Myrkdalen!
Vikafjellet is the gateway to Stølsheimen, the mountain area stretching between the Sognefjord, Vossafjella, and Masfjordfjella. Historically, dairy farming has been the primary use of this mountain area, with more than 40 mountain farms registered in Stølsheimen. This area offers lush green landscapes and beautiful highland terrain, providing several excellent mountain hikes for children and adults.
For a nice day trip with the family on Vikafjellet, we recommend the child-friendly terrain in Sendedalen. The trail along the four mountain lakes is perfect for young children, as the easy and accessible terrain allows them to choose how far they want to go. Additionally, dipping at the small natural beaches will be amazing when the summer days turn warm.
