Start the mountain hike with a chairlift

Just around the corner from Myrkdalen Hotel you'll find Myrkdalen Express, the chairlift that takes the whole family high up into the mountains in 5 minutes.

From the top at 860 meters above sea level, you can descend to Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge or the idyllic Mørkvesstølen. Along the way, there are beautiful pools in the river where you can have a swim on warm summer days. For a longer hike, you can continue towards Svortetjødn from the mountain pastures.

Nature trail to Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge

Nature trails are fun and make mountain hikes more exciting for children. On the trail between Helgatun and Vetlebotn, the whole family can challenge themselves at various stations with assorted questions. Maps and answer sheets are available at Myrkdalen Hotel. Of course, the children will receive a small prize once they have completed the tasks.

When you reach the top of the trail, you'll find Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge, perfect for a well-deserved break for the little ones. Enjoy a cup of coffee, a cold ice cream or homemade pancakes, before you continue your journey back down.

Try family-friendly disc golf

Disc golf is one of the world's fastest-growing sports and has recently become very popular in Norway. Each summer in Myrkdalen, a family-friendly 5-hole course is set up where the goal is to hit the baskets with each individual frisbee in as few throws as possible.

The course is free to use. If you need your own frisbees, you can rent them at Myrkdalen Hotel.

Biking along the Rallar Road from Finse to Flåm

If you have older children, you should definitely consider the historic Rallarvegen. It was built by the workers who constructed the Bergen Railway at the end of the 19th century. The stretch from the high mountain terrain at Finse to the fjord landscape in Flåm can be cycled in one day. For an extra thrill, you can even swap the bike for the Flåm Zipline down to Kårdal.

Summit hike with spectacular views

The mountain peak Prest near Aurlandsfjorden is a gem of a hike. The hike starts from the national tourist route over Aurlandsfjellet, just an hour's drive from Myrkdalen. A clearly marked trail from the the designated parking area leads up to the viewpoint at 1363 meters above sea level.

After covering around 2.5 km with a 500-meter elevation gain, you'll arrive at the viewpoint. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Aurlandsfjord, with the landscape extending southward towards Flåm and northward towards the distinct peak of Kamben, where the Aurlandsfjord meets the Nærøyfjord.

"Here you can bring children of all ages. Take it at their pace and go as far as the kids are up for, because the view over the Aurlandsfjord is phenomenal already after just a few hundred meters."
