Flåm AS has become Norway’s best.
Explore the heart of the wild landscape in the fjords of Norway. This exclusive package combines the Flåm Railway, a Fjord Cruise on the Nærøyfjord and the historic Fretheim Hotel with its Eco-Lighthouse certification. Enjoy the attractions and sustainable accommodation with this “green package”. A unique combination of mountains and fjords – all with views over the spectacular World Heritage landscape.
The village of Flåm is the starting point for countless activities in and around Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord, one of two Norwegian fjords to be found on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It shares this honour with the Geirangerfjord and Bryggen in Bergen.
The extremely narrow UNESCO-listed fjord is surrounded by tall mountains and tiny villages. Here and there, waterfalls cascade down the mountainside, leaving a lasting impression on even the most well-travelled of tourists. The Nærøyfjord has been voted one of the wonders of the natural world by CNN, and National Geographic has previously titled the Nærøyfjord “The best unspoiled travel destination in the world”.
Fjord Cruises on the Nærøyfjord run all year round. The fjords are a beautiful sight at any time of year. This is wonderful news for anyone looking to experience these places outside the peak tourist season. In spring, you can see cascading waterfalls of meltwater and pale green hillsides studded with flowering fruit trees. During the summer, the fjord is clad in green, with snow still lying on the surrounding mountain peaks. In autumn, you can enjoy clear, bright blue skies that mirror the water, and mountainsides in yellow and red hues. The winter brings with it snow-covered, tranquil landscapes where you could hear a pin drop. Every season has its own special beauty, and these natural gems are well worth a visit at any time of year.

The section of railway between Flåm and Myrdal has also been named one of the greatest engineering feats. The Flåm Railway, just over 20 kilometres long, took almost 20 years to complete, from 1923 to 1940. 80% of the section is at a gradient of 5.5% and it has no fewer than 20 tunnels – one of them even passes through a 180-degree curve!
After about 50 minutes, which includes a stop for photos at Kjosfossen, you’ll leave the train at Vatnahalsen 811 metres above sea level, just before the terminal at Myrdal.
The exclusive Fretheim Hotel we’ll make sure you get to relax and enjoy the very best local food after a gentle day at the Nærøyfjord and on the Flåm Railway. Flåm has been very popular with tourists since the mid-19th century, when English lords travelled to the Sognefjord in their yachts to find new places to hunt and fish. The hotel has been modernised several times in line with changes in the tourist industry, and nowadays it’s a truly outstanding complement to the fjord.
Start your day with plenty of time to enjoy your breakfast at the Fretheim Hotel. Fresh bread and other baked goods from Flåm Bakeri, crispy bacon from Haugen Gardsmat and fresh vegetables from Sogn Jord- og Hagebruksskule and Lærdal make sure you keep your energy levels up throughout your morning.
