Sustainability

Nature is the foundation of Norway’s best Group and the experiences we offer. It allows us to create memories in some of Norway’s most spectacular landscapes, while also giving us a responsibility to consider how we operate. Our actions affect nature, people and the communities around us.

Sustainability as a Guiding Principle

Norway’s best Group aims to create more than memorable travel experiences. We contribute to year-round activity, jobs and wider benefits in the destinations where we operate. In doing so, we help local communities thrive and remain attractive places to live and visit.

That is why sustainability is a guiding principle in our strategy and part of how we develop and run our business. We aim to care for nature, support people and maintain a financially sound and profitable business.

Our ambition to be among the best goes beyond the experiences we offer. It also shapes how we use our resources and take responsibility for nature, people and the communities around us.

By questioning how we work today, we either discover new opportunities to improve or gain a deeper understanding of why we do things the way we do.

(Maria Galmstrup, Sustainability Lead)

Our Focus Areas

We are committed to taking a focused approach to sustainability. As part of our sustainability strategy, we have identified five main focus areas. These reflect where we, as a company, have the greatest influence and the best opportunities to make a positive difference for people and the environment. They guide our strategic priorities and the actions we take.

Our ambition is to be an organisation that keeps learning, improving and taking responsibility, even though we do not have all the answers today. Through collaboration, clear priorities and a long-term approach, we will continue to develop Norway’s best Group in a way that creates value for our guests, our employees, our local communities, future generations and the natural world we all share.

Our Work in Practice

Powerdock

The batteries on board Future of The Fjords and Legacy of The Fjords can be recharged in around 20 minutes at the quays in Gudvangen and Flåm. This is made possible by a purpose-built energy storage system that acts as an enormous power bank. It also serves as a floating quay and can be moved between locations when needed.

Locally Sourced Ingredients

Although some products need to come from other parts of Norway, we source ingredients from the local area wherever possible. The kitchen at Fretheim Hotel in Flåm previously received 11 lorry deliveries a week. Today, this has been reduced to four. As all these deliveries come from Bergen, this represents a 63% reduction in delivery journeys.

Reusing Ski Passes

At our ski resorts, many guests reuse their ski pass cards from one season to the next. This reduces the need to produce new cards and encourages greater awareness of reuse. For many guests, adding a new sticker at the start of the season has also become a much-loved tradition.

Refillable Dispensers

At Fretheim Hotel and Myrkdalen Hotel, small single-use soap containers have been replaced with refillable dispensers using products from local suppliers Fitjar and ELM Organisk. This reduces the use of single-use plastic and unnecessary packaging, while guests continue to enjoy high-quality products from local suppliers.

Certifications

Selected sites within Norway’s best Group are certified under the Eco-Lighthouse scheme, known as Miljøfyrtårn in Norwegian. Eco-Lighthouse is an established environmental management system with specific requirements for systematic sustainability work across operations and the organisation.

We place particular emphasis on certifying our accommodation providers. They account for a substantial part of our business and our guests’ experience, while also using significant resources in their daily operations.

Eco-Lighthouse gives us a practical framework for reducing our environmental impact and incorporating sustainability into the guest experience.
